MEET
THA' MAN - CHAZ ‘SLIM’ WILLIAMS
Chaz changed
the direction of his life following his release from
prison in 1989 when he structured the company, incorporated,
and trademarked Black Hand Entertainment.
He set up his office, in the South Jamaica hood, where
he grew up. Chaz says,” it’s
was no better way to give back to the community than
to be there to provide opportunities for those who face
the same obstacles and tribulations of your past”.
So combining street experience with a Bachelor’s
degree in Business Administration, he entered the industry
as a special event and concert promoter. He parlayed
that into his own recording studio in the hood, expanding
then to an independent record label with the release
of a compilation in 1999 called, “Black Gangster”.
This soundtrack featured Jay Z, Ja
Rule, 50 Cent, DMX, Mac
Dre, Mac Mall, Donell
Jones, and others. The album, without a commercial
radio record or video, sold over 100,000 units by grass-root,
word-of-mouth promotions. The album soundscanned around
59,000 units, with about 20,000 units on the hand-to-hand,
unconventional grind, and another 30,000 in overseas
territories.
During
that period Chaz also dabbled in artist
management. One of his early clients was 50 Cent.
As time evolved Chaz signed GRAFH as
his flagship artist, and followed with the signing of Prinz.
He has had distribution deals with WEA, Sony, and Universal,
and has collaborated with Dame Dash on
several business endeavors, including the prepping of
the film based on Chaz’ life titled, “InsideOut”. Black
Hand has always made noise in the street and
intends to continue its rise as a movement, while it
readies the much anticipated debut release of the GRAFH and Prinz projects.
